What should I wear?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift

What should I wear?

What you should wear for the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift depends on the season and weather, but the key is to dress in layers. The summit is at a much higher elevation than Banff, and temperatures are often 5–10°C (9–18°F) cooler than in town. Mountain weather can also change quickly, with sunshine giving way to wind, clouds, or light rain in a short period of time.

During the summer, comfortable outdoor clothing is usually all you need. A T-shirt or lightweight hiking shirt paired with shorts or lightweight pants works well, but it's wise to bring a fleece or light jacket for the summit. Even on warm afternoons in Banff, the breeze at the top can make it feel surprisingly cool.

In spring and autumn, a warmer jacket becomes more important. Layering a base layer, fleece, and windproof or waterproof outer shell allows you to adjust to changing conditions throughout the day. Mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, particularly in May, September, and October.

Good footwear is recommended, even if you don't plan to hike. Comfortable walking shoes or light hiking shoes provide better grip on gravel paths and uneven ground around the summit. If you intend to explore the hiking trails beyond the chairlift, sturdy hiking boots with good traction are the best choice.

A hat and sunglasses are highly recommended. At higher elevations, the sun is stronger, and the mountain air is often very bright. Sunscreen is also important, as ultraviolet exposure increases with elevation and can lead to sunburn even on cooler days.

If rain is in the forecast, bring a lightweight waterproof jacket rather than an umbrella. Umbrellas can be awkward on an open-air chairlift, and mountain showers are often accompanied by wind.

Even during the summer, carrying a small backpack with an extra layer, water bottle, camera, and a few snacks makes your visit more comfortable. If you're planning a longer hike from the summit, include additional water, a map, and bear spray.

The chairlift itself is open to the elements, so you'll feel the breeze during the ride. A light jacket is often appreciated, especially on the return trip later in the day when temperatures begin to cool.

Overall, the best approach is to wear comfortable outdoor clothing, sturdy shoes, and layers that can be added or removed as conditions change. Being prepared for cooler temperatures at the summit will help you enjoy your time on the mountain, whether you're sightseeing, dining at the Cliffhouse Bistro, or exploring the alpine trails.
