What should I wear?

What you should wear depends on the season, but one rule always applies at the Banff Gondola summit: dress in layers. The summit is more than 700 metres (2,300 feet) higher than the Banff townsite, so it is often noticeably cooler and windier.

During summer, comfortable walking shoes or light hiking shoes are ideal for exploring the summit and boardwalk. Wear lightweight clothing, but bring a light jacket or fleece, as temperatures can be 5–10°C cooler than in town. A hat, sunglasses, and sunscreen are also recommended because the higher elevation means stronger sunlight.

In spring and autumn, temperatures can change quickly throughout the day. A warm jacket, long pants, and sturdy walking shoes are recommended. Layering allows you to stay comfortable if the weather shifts from sunshine to cool winds or light rain.

During winter, wear a warm insulated jacket, thermal layers, gloves, a winter hat, and insulated boots with good traction. Snow and icy patches are common on the summit and boardwalk, and the wind can make it feel significantly colder than the temperature shown on the forecast.

Comfortable footwear is important year-round. Even if you aren't hiking Sulphur Mountain, you'll likely spend time walking around the summit complex and along the boardwalk, so supportive shoes are much more comfortable than sandals or dress shoes.

Mountain weather can change rapidly in any season. A sunny morning can become cool, windy, or snowy within a short time, particularly during spring and autumn. Carrying an extra layer or a lightweight waterproof jacket is always a good idea.

If you plan to hike Sulphur Mountain, dress as you would for a mountain hike. Wear hiking shoes or boots, moisture-wicking clothing, and carry water, snacks, and an extra layer for the cooler temperatures at the summit.
