What should I bring?
You don't need a lot of equipment to enjoy the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift, but bringing a few essentials will make your visit much more comfortable. Since you'll be spending time at a higher elevation in an open-air environment, it's best to be prepared for changing mountain conditions.
Dress in layers. Even on a warm summer day in Banff, the summit is usually cooler, and the chairlift ride can feel breezy. A light fleece, windbreaker, or waterproof jacket is recommended, especially if you're visiting in the morning, evening, or during unsettled weather.
Wear comfortable walking shoes or light hiking shoes. Even if you don't plan to hike, you'll likely walk around the summit on gravel paths and uneven terrain. If you're planning a longer hike, sturdy hiking boots are the better choice.
Bring sunglasses, sunscreen, and a hat. The sun is stronger at higher elevations, and you'll spend much of your time outdoors with little shade. A wide-brimmed hat or baseball cap helps protect against both the sun and mountain breeze.
Carry a reusable water bottle to stay hydrated. Higher elevations and dry mountain air can leave you feeling thirsty more quickly than expected.
Don't forget your camera or smartphone. The chairlift, panoramic viewpoints, wildlife, and historic Cliffhouse Bistro provide outstanding photo opportunities throughout your visit. If photography is a priority, consider bringing binoculars or a telephoto lens for spotting wildlife on distant slopes.
If you're planning to hike, pack a small daypack with extra water, snacks, a map if needed, and bear spray. Weather can change quickly, so an extra layer and a lightweight rain jacket are also worthwhile additions.
If you're visiting with young children, bring a front carrier or backpack child carrier, as strollers cannot be taken on the chairlift. Families should also pack snacks, water, and an extra layer for each child.
If you're bringing your dog, pack a leash, water bowl, waste bags, and plenty of water. The summit can be sunny and dry, and pets appreciate regular breaks for hydration.
Finally, bring a sense of curiosity and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the experience. Whether you're taking photos, watching wildlife, relaxing at the Cliffhouse Bistro, or simply admiring the mountain views, the best visits are those where you can slow down and appreciate the beauty of the Canadian Rockies without feeling rushed.
