What is the elevation at the summit?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

What is the elevation at the summit?

The summit of the Banff Gondola sits at an elevation of 2,281 metres (7,486 feet) above sea level on the summit of Sulphur Mountain. At this altitude, visitors enjoy sweeping views over Banff National Park, the Bow Valley, and countless surrounding peaks in the Canadian Rockies.

Because of the higher elevation, the summit is typically 5 to 10°C (9 to 18°F) cooler than the town of Banff. Weather can change rapidly, with sunshine, wind, clouds, or even light snow possible at different times of the year. Bringing an extra layer is recommended, even during the summer months.

The summit features several outdoor viewing platforms, all designed to maximize the panoramic scenery. Visitors can also follow the boardwalk along the mountain ridge toward Sanson's Peak, gaining slightly higher viewpoints and even broader vistas of the surrounding landscape.

At 2,281 metres, the summit is above the tree line in many areas, creating a true alpine environment with rocky terrain, hardy alpine plants, and excellent opportunities to observe the unique mountain ecosystem. The thinner, cooler air and expansive views give visitors a genuine high-mountain experience without the need for a strenuous climb.

Although the summit feels remote, it is equipped with modern visitor facilities, including restaurants, cafés, interpretive exhibits, gift shops, washrooms, and indoor observation areas. This combination of high-altitude scenery and comfortable amenities makes the Banff Gondola one of the most accessible ways to experience the alpine landscape of the Canadian Rockies.
