What is the boardwalk?

The Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk is an elevated wooden walkway that extends from the Banff Gondola summit complex to Sanson's Peak, allowing visitors to explore beyond the main viewing area while enjoying spectacular panoramic views.

The boardwalk follows the mountain ridge for approximately one kilometre round trip and takes most visitors 20 to 30 minutes to complete at a leisurely pace. The route is easy to follow, with a combination of wooden boardwalks, viewing platforms, and a series of stairs leading to the historic Sanson's Peak weather station.

Walking the boardwalk is one of the highlights of a visit to the Banff Gondola. As you move away from the summit buildings, the crowds begin to thin, and you'll experience uninterrupted views of the Bow Valley, Banff townsite, Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, Tunnel Mountain, and countless surrounding peaks. Every section of the boardwalk offers a slightly different perspective, making it a favourite for photographers.

Along the route, you'll find interpretive signs that explain the area's geology, wildlife, history, alpine environment, and the important work carried out at the historic cosmic ray station on Sanson's Peak. These exhibits add context to the spectacular scenery and help visitors better understand the unique mountain environment.

The boardwalk is suitable for most visitors, although the final climb to Sanson's Peak includes a staircase. Those who prefer not to climb the stairs can still enjoy excellent views from the lower sections and observation platforms.

Throughout the year, the experience changes with the seasons. Summer brings alpine wildflowers and vibrant green forests below, autumn offers crisp mountain air and colourful valleys, while winter transforms the boardwalk into a snowy alpine landscape with dramatic ice-covered peaks stretching to the horizon.
