What is the best time of day to visit?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift

What is the best time of day to visit?

The best time of day to visit the Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift depends on the type of experience you're looking for, but early morning and late afternoon are generally considered the best times.

Early morning is ideal for visitors who want a peaceful experience. The mountain is typically at its quietest shortly after opening, allowing you to enjoy the chairlift with minimal waiting. The air is cool and crisp, visibility is often at its best, and the surrounding mountains are beautifully illuminated by the morning sun. Wildlife is also more active during the early hours, increasing your chances of spotting deer, bighorn sheep, marmots, or birds of prey.

Late afternoon and early evening are another excellent time to visit. As the sun begins to lower, the light becomes softer and warmer, casting a golden glow across the Bow Valley and surrounding peaks. This is one of the best times for photography, as the mountains take on richer colours and the scenery becomes even more dramatic. The cooler temperatures also make it a comfortable time to relax at the summit or enjoy a meal at the historic Cliffhouse Bistro.

Midday offers the warmest temperatures and excellent visibility, making it a great choice if you're combining the chairlift with lunch or another activity. However, this is also when the attraction is generally at its busiest, particularly during July and August.

If you're visiting during the peak summer season, arriving shortly after the chairlift opens is the best way to avoid larger crowds. During September, visitor numbers naturally decrease, so almost any time of day provides a peaceful experience, with the added bonus of colourful autumn scenery and crisp mountain air.

For most visitors, the ideal visit is either 9:00–11:00 a.m. for quiet conditions and fresh mountain air, or 4:00 p.m. until closing for beautiful golden light, cooler temperatures, and a relaxing end to the day. Both times showcase Mount Norquay at its best while avoiding the busiest part of the day. Book the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift
