What is the Cosmic Ray Station?

The Cosmic Ray Station on Sulphur Mountain is a historic scientific research facility located near Sanson's Peak, just beyond the Banff Gondola summit. It was built in 1956 to study cosmic rays-high-energy particles that travel through space and constantly enter Earth's atmosphere.

Scientists chose Sulphur Mountain because its high elevation provided a better location for detecting these particles than sites at lower altitudes. The thinner atmosphere allows more cosmic rays to reach the instruments before they interact with the air, making the summit an ideal place for research.

Researchers working at the station monitored cosmic radiation around the clock using specialized detectors. Their observations helped scientists better understand the Sun, Earth's magnetic field, space weather, and the behavior of particles arriving from deep within our galaxy. The Cosmic Ray Station replaced the earlier weather observation role of Sanson's Peak, continuing Sulphur Mountain's long tradition as a centre for scientific study.
