What is the Above Banff Interpretive Centre?

The Above Banff Interpretive Centre is an interactive educational experience located inside the Banff Gondola's summit building on Sulphur Mountain. Included with your gondola admission, it is designed to help visitors discover the natural wonders, history, wildlife, and culture of Banff National Park through hands-on exhibits and engaging displays. Rather than simply looking at the scenery, the Interpretive Centre explains the stories behind the landscape surrounding you.

One of the main themes is the geology of the Canadian Rockies. Interactive exhibits explain how ancient seas, shifting tectonic plates, glaciers, and millions of years of erosion shaped the dramatic mountain peaks and valleys visible from the summit. As you look out from the observation decks, you'll have a much greater appreciation of how the landscape came to be.

The centre also explores the plants and wildlife that call Banff National Park home. Visitors can learn about the alpine environment, how animals survive the harsh mountain climate, and why protecting these fragile ecosystems is so important. Exhibits highlight species such as grizzly bears, elk, bighorn sheep, mountain goats, marmots, pikas, and the unique wildflowers and forests found at different elevations.

Another important focus is the human history of Sulphur Mountain and Banff National Park. Exhibits share stories about Indigenous Peoples who have lived in and travelled through the region for thousands of years, the early explorers and mountaineers who helped map the Rockies, and the development of Banff as Canada's first national park.

The Interpretive Centre also introduces visitors to the historic Cosmic Ray Station, located at the end of the summit boardwalk. Before walking to the restored research station, you can learn about the scientific experiments conducted there and why Sulphur Mountain became an important location for atmospheric and cosmic ray research during the mid-20th century.

Families will find plenty to enjoy, as many of the exhibits are interactive and designed for visitors of all ages. Children can engage with hands-on displays while adults can explore detailed information about the mountain environment, making it both entertaining and educational.

The centre is completely self-guided, allowing you to explore at your own pace. Some visitors spend just 15 or 20 minutes browsing the exhibits, while others devote an hour or more before heading outside to the observation decks, restaurants, gift shop, theatre, and the scenic boardwalk to Sanson's Peak.
