What is Sanson's Peak?

Sanson's Peak is a scenic summit on the ridge of Sulphur Mountain, located just beyond the Banff Gondola summit complex. It is the destination of the famous Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk and is one of the most historically significant viewpoints in Banff National Park.

Named after Norman Bethune Sanson, a pioneering meteorologist, the peak is home to the historic Sanson's Peak Meteorological Station. Beginning in 1903, Sanson climbed Sulphur Mountain regularly-often in all kinds of weather-to record atmospheric observations. Over nearly 30 years, he completed thousands of trips to the summit, providing valuable weather data that helped scientists better understand mountain weather in the Canadian Rockies.

Today, the small stone building that served as the weather station remains as a National Historic Site and is one of the most recognizable landmarks on Sulphur Mountain. Although visitors cannot enter the building, it has been carefully preserved as a reminder of the dedication and perseverance required to collect weather observations before modern technology.

Sanson's Peak also offers some of the finest panoramic views in Banff National Park. From the summit, visitors can enjoy sweeping vistas of the Bow Valley, the Banff townsite, Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, Tunnel Mountain, the Bow River, Vermilion Lakes, and numerous surrounding mountain ranges. Because it sits slightly beyond the main gondola viewing platforms, many visitors find it quieter and even more rewarding.

Reaching Sanson's Peak is easy for most visitors. The walk from the Banff Gondola summit follows the elevated boardwalk along the mountain ridge and takes about 10 to 15 minutes each way. The final approach includes a staircase leading to the historic weather station.

For many visitors, Sanson's Peak is much more than the end of the boardwalk.
