What is Nightrise?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

What is Nightrise?

Nightrise is an immersive multimedia experience held at the Banff Gondola after dark. Rather than simply visiting the summit at night, guests become part of a self-guided journey that combines light, sound, storytelling, and the natural mountain landscape. The experience transforms the summit of Sulphur Mountain into an illuminated alpine environment where technology and nature work together to create a memorable evening adventure.

Created in collaboration with Indigenous storytellers, Nightrise celebrates the connections between the land, the sky, water, wildlife, and people. The experience is inspired by Indigenous perspectives on the natural world and encourages visitors to slow down, reflect, and experience the mountain in a new way. Instead of focusing only on the spectacular views, Nightrise invites guests to think about the stories and relationships that have existed on this landscape for thousands of years.

As you move through the summit, you'll encounter a series of themed installations featuring projections, lighting effects, music, and soundscapes. Each area has its own atmosphere, encouraging visitors to explore at their own pace. The pathways, observation areas, and gathering spaces are transformed into artistic environments that change throughout the evening.

One of the highlights is the Cosmic Ray Station and the boardwalk leading toward Sanson's Peak. At night, this historic area takes on an entirely different character as carefully designed lighting and immersive audio enhance the journey. Walking the boardwalk beneath the stars while surrounded by illuminated mountain scenery creates an experience that is very different from a daytime visit.

The summit buildings also become part of the experience, with artistic lighting, projections, and themed spaces that complement the outdoor installations. Throughout the evening, visitors can warm up indoors, enjoy a hot drink, or dine at one of the summit restaurants before continuing their exploration.

Nightrise is suitable for families, couples, and visitors of all ages. Children are often fascinated by the colourful lights and interactive atmosphere, while adults appreciate the storytelling, artistic design, and peaceful nighttime setting. Because it is self-guided, you can spend as much time as you like exploring each area.

The event typically runs during the fall and winter months, when darkness arrives earlier and the longer evenings enhance the immersive lighting effects. Snow-covered landscapes often add another layer of beauty, with illuminated trees, pathways, and mountain scenery creating a magical alpine atmosphere.

Nightrise has become one of Banff's signature evening experiences because it offers something completely different from a traditional sightseeing visit. Instead of simply looking at the mountains, visitors experience Sulphur Mountain through light, sound, storytelling, and art, creating an unforgettable nighttime journey high above the Bow Valley.
