What happens if the weather is bad?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

What happens if the weather is bad?

Mountain weather can change quickly at Sunshine Village, so conditions may be very different at the top than they are in Banff. A sunny morning can give way to clouds, rain, wind, or even a brief snowfall at higher elevations, even during the middle of summer. Because the village sits high in the alpine, temperatures are often several degrees cooler than in the valley.

If it begins to rain lightly, the sightseeing experience usually continues as normal. The enclosed gondola provides a comfortable ride, and many visitors simply put on a waterproof jacket and continue exploring the trails or enjoy a meal inside one of the mountain lodges until the weather improves.

During periods of high winds, lightning, or severe weather, the gondola or Standish Chairlift may be temporarily delayed or suspended for safety. Operations resume once conditions are considered safe. These temporary interruptions are uncommon, but they are a normal part of operating lifts in a high-alpine environment.

Low clouds or fog can also reduce visibility, sometimes hiding the panoramic mountain views. However, mountain weather often changes rapidly, and it's not unusual for the clouds to clear later in the day, revealing spectacular scenery after a short wait.

To make the most of your visit, it's a good idea to dress in layers and bring a waterproof jacket, even if the forecast for Banff is warm and sunny. Being prepared for changing conditions allows you to enjoy the mountain comfortably, regardless of the weather. Book the Banff Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift
