What happens if it rains?

Light rain does not usually stop the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift from operating. If the weather is safe, the chairlift continues to run, and visitors can still enjoy the ride, although the experience will be different from a sunny day.

Because the chairlift is completely open, you will be exposed to the rain during the ride. A waterproof jacket or rain shell is much more practical than an umbrella, as umbrellas are difficult to use safely on an open chairlift, especially if it is windy.

Rain often creates a unique mountain atmosphere. Low clouds may drift through the surrounding peaks, forests become richer in colour, and the mountain takes on a peaceful, misty appearance. While distant views may be limited, photographers often appreciate the dramatic mood that rain and fog can create.

If the rain is only passing through, conditions can improve quickly. Mountain weather changes rapidly, and it's not unusual for a brief shower to be followed by sunshine and clear views only 30 minutes later.

The Cliffhouse Bistro provides a comfortable indoor place to wait if the weather becomes unpleasant. Many visitors enjoy having a meal or a hot drink while waiting for the skies to clear before continuing to explore the summit.

Walking trails and viewpoints may become wet and slippery after rainfall. If you plan to hike, wear shoes with good traction and take extra care on rocks, gravel, and wooden surfaces.

In the event of heavy rain, thunderstorms, lightning, or strong winds, the chairlift may be delayed or temporarily suspended for safety. Operations resume once conditions improve and it is safe to do so.

A light rain shower doesn't have to spoil your visit. With the right clothing and realistic expectations, many visitors still have an enjoyable experience. In fact, some of the most memorable mountain landscapes occur just after a rainstorm, when the clouds begin to lift and fresh mountain air reveals dramatic views across the Bow Valley. Book the Mt.
