What happens if it rains?

Rain does not usually stop the Banff Gondola from operating. The gondola runs in most rainy conditions, and the fully enclosed cabins keep passengers dry and protected from the weather during the eight-minute ride to the summit.

Rain can create a completely different mountain experience. Low clouds and mist often drift through the surrounding peaks, giving the landscape a dramatic and atmospheric appearance. Forests become a deeper shade of green, waterfalls may flow more strongly, and the changing weather can make the scenery feel especially peaceful.

Visibility varies depending on the intensity of the rain. During light showers, visitors often still enjoy excellent views of the Bow Valley and surrounding mountains. During heavier rain or low cloud, some of the distant scenery may be hidden, but mountain weather changes quickly, and it is common for the clouds to lift or break apart during a visit.

The summit building provides plenty of indoor space to enjoy if the weather is wet. Visitors can explore the interpretive exhibits, relax in the cafés, browse the gift shops, or enjoy a meal while waiting for conditions to improve. Many of the large windows still provide beautiful views, even when it's raining outside.

If you plan to explore the outdoor observation decks or walk the boardwalk, it's a good idea to wear a waterproof jacket and shoes with good traction, as surfaces can become wet and slippery. Temperatures at the summit are often cooler than in Banff, so dressing in layers is also recommended.

Unless the rain is accompanied by severe weather or exceptionally strong winds, the Banff Gondola generally continues operating as normal. Many visitors find that rainy days offer a quieter experience and a unique perspective of the Canadian Rockies that is very different from a bright, sunny day.
