What happens during thunderstorms?

Thunderstorms are taken very seriously at the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift. Because the chairlift is an open-air attraction operating on an exposed mountainside, lightning and severe weather can create unsafe conditions. Visitor safety is always the highest priority.

If a thunderstorm approaches the mountain, chairlift operations may be temporarily suspended. Lift operators continuously monitor weather conditions and can stop loading new passengers or temporarily close the lift if lightning, strong winds, or other hazardous conditions develop nearby.

If you are already at the summit when a storm arrives, staff will provide instructions and may ask visitors to remain inside the Cliffhouse Bistro or other sheltered areas until it is safe to resume operations. If you are at the base, you may be asked to wait until the storm has passed before boarding.

Mountain thunderstorms often develop quickly during the summer, particularly in the afternoon. They may bring heavy rain, strong wind gusts, hail, and frequent lightning. Fortunately, many storms move through the mountains relatively quickly, and operations can often resume once conditions improve.

If you're planning to hike beyond the summit, it's important to pay close attention to the weather. Should you hear thunder or see dark storm clouds approaching, head back toward the chairlift terminal or another safe shelter as soon as possible. Exposed ridges, high viewpoints, and open alpine terrain are not safe places to be during a lightning storm.

To reduce the chance of being affected by afternoon storms, many visitors choose to ride the chairlift earlier in the day. Morning conditions are often calmer, cooler, and more stable, making them ideal for sightseeing, hiking, and photography.

While weather delays can occasionally affect your plans, they are relatively uncommon and are implemented only when necessary. Once the storm has moved away and conditions are considered safe, the chairlift normally resumes operation and visitors can continue enjoying the mountain. Book the Mt.
