What can you see from the top?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

What can you see from the top?

From the top of the Standish Viewing Deck, you'll enjoy one of the most breathtaking panoramas in Banff National Park. The viewpoint overlooks a vast alpine landscape of rugged mountain peaks, rolling meadows, sparkling lakes, and deep valleys. On a clear day, you can see mountain ranges stretching to the horizon in every direction, creating a true 360-degree Rocky Mountain experience.

One of the biggest highlights is the view of Rock Isle Lake, whose brilliant turquoise waters are surrounded by alpine meadows and rocky peaks. Nearby, you'll also see Grizzly Lake and Laryx Lake, each adding to the spectacular scenery. The vivid colours of these alpine lakes stand out against the green meadows in summer and the grey limestone peaks that surround them.

The surrounding landscape is equally impressive. You'll see countless mountain peaks rising above the Continental Divide, along with rolling alpine ridges that remain largely untouched. During the summer months, the meadows below are often covered in colourful wildflowers, creating a striking contrast against the rugged mountain terrain.

The viewing deck is also an excellent place to watch for wildlife. Mountain goats, hoary marmots, pikas, Columbian ground squirrels, and a variety of alpine birds are often spotted in the surrounding meadows and rocky slopes. Early mornings and quieter times of the day offer the best opportunities for wildlife viewing.

For photographers, the Standish Viewing Deck is considered one of the premier viewpoints in the Canadian Rockies. The combination of turquoise lakes, expansive mountain vistas, colourful alpine vegetation, and dramatic lighting throughout the day creates outstanding opportunities for landscape photography. Whether you're visiting to admire the scenery, capture memorable photos, or simply enjoy the peaceful alpine environment, the views from the top are among the finest that Sunshine Village has to offer.
