Is the gondola open year-round?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Is the gondola open year-round?

No. The Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola is not open year-round for sightseeing. The sightseeing operation is seasonal and typically runs from late June through late September, when visitors can access Sunshine Village, Sunshine Meadows, and the Standish Chairlift.

Outside of the summer sightseeing season, the gondola transitions to supporting the resort's winter ski and snowboard operations. During the winter months, it is used primarily to transport skiers and snowboarders to the mountain rather than serving as a general sightseeing attraction.

Because of this seasonal change, visitors who want to experience the gondola for sightseeing, hiking, wildflowers, alpine lakes, and panoramic viewpoints should plan their visit during the summer operating season. This is when the trails are open, the meadows are accessible, and the full sightseeing experience is available.

If you're hoping to visit outside the summer months, it's worth checking the seasonal operating dates before making travel plans, as opening and closing dates can vary slightly from year to year depending on mountain conditions.
