Is the boardwalk difficult?

No. The Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk is considered an easy walk and is suitable for most visitors. It is much less demanding than hiking Sulphur Mountain and can be enjoyed by families, seniors, and anyone with a reasonable level of mobility.

The boardwalk follows a wide, well-maintained wooden pathway that runs along the mountain ridge from the Banff Gondola summit complex toward Sanson's Peak. Most of the route is relatively level with gentle changes in elevation, allowing visitors to walk at a comfortable pace while taking in the spectacular scenery.

The only more challenging section is the final staircase leading up to Sanson's Peak and the historic weather station. The stairs require a moderate amount of effort, but many visitors simply take their time and stop along the way to enjoy the views. If you prefer not to climb the stairs, you can still walk most of the boardwalk and enjoy excellent panoramic viewpoints without reaching the very top.

The entire walk is approximately 1 kilometre (0.6 miles) round trip, and most people complete it in 20 to 30 minutes, although many spend longer stopping for photographs and enjoying the scenery.

Because the boardwalk sits at a high alpine elevation, temperatures are often cooler than in Banff, and wind can make it feel even colder. During winter, the boardwalk is maintained, but snow and icy patches may still be present, so footwear with good traction is helpful.
