Is it colder at the top?

Yes. The summit of Sulphur Mountain is almost always colder than the Banff townsite. Because the Banff Gondola climbs to an elevation of 2,281 metres (7,486 feet), temperatures at the top are typically 5 to 10°C (9 to 18°F) cooler than in downtown Banff.

Wind also makes a significant difference. Even on warm summer days, a breeze at the summit can make it feel much cooler, especially on the observation decks and along the boardwalk where you're more exposed to the elements.

During summer, visitors often arrive in Banff wearing short sleeves but appreciate having a light jacket or sweater once they reach the summit. Early mornings and evenings can feel especially cool, even in July and August.

In spring and autumn, the temperature difference is even more noticeable. It may feel comfortable in town while the summit experiences chilly winds, frost, or even light snowfall. Snow can sometimes fall on Sulphur Mountain while Banff remains snow-free.

During winter, the summit is considerably colder than the valley below. Strong alpine winds and higher elevation can produce much lower wind chill temperatures, making insulated clothing, gloves, hats, and winter boots essential for staying comfortable.

The weather can also change quickly. Clear skies can give way to clouds, wind, or snow within a short period, so it's always wise to bring an extra layer regardless of the season.

Despite the cooler temperatures, many visitors find the crisp mountain air part of the experience.
