How long should I plan for my visit?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift

How long should I plan for my visit?

Most visitors should plan to spend 2 to 3 hours at the Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift, although you can easily extend your visit if you want to enjoy a meal or simply spend more time taking in the scenery.

The chairlift ride itself takes about 10 minutes each way, for a total of approximately 20 minutes of riding. Once you reach the top, you'll likely want to spend time exploring the viewpoints, admiring the panoramic views of the Bow Valley and surrounding mountains, and taking photographs. The peaceful atmosphere encourages visitors to slow down and enjoy the alpine setting rather than rushing back down.

If you plan to visit the historic Cliffhouse Bistro, allow extra time to enjoy a meal or refreshments with mountain views. Many guests spend 45 minutes to an hour dining, making the overall experience feel much more relaxed. The upper station is also a great place to sit, enjoy the fresh mountain air, and watch climbers beginning or returning from the Via Ferrata routes.

Photographers often stay longer, especially during the morning or late afternoon when the light is at its best. Wildlife enthusiasts may also choose to spend additional time scanning the surrounding slopes for marmots, bighorn sheep, deer, or birds of prey.

Here are some suggested visit lengths:

1 hour: Ride the chairlift, enjoy the views, and return.

2 hours: Ride the chairlift, explore the summit area, take photographs, and relax before descending.

3 hours or more: Ride the chairlift, enjoy a leisurely meal at the Cliffhouse Bistro, take in the scenery, watch the Via Ferrata climbers, and spend plenty of time enjoying the mountain atmosphere.

Because Mount Norquay is only about a 10- to 15-minute drive from downtown Banff, it's easy to fit into almost any itinerary. Whether you visit for a quick scenic outing or a leisurely mountain escape, the chairlift offers a rewarding experience without requiring a full day. Book the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift
