How long is the gondola ride?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

How long is the gondola ride?

The Banff Gondola ride takes approximately 8 minutes each way. During the journey, the enclosed gondola cabin travels from the lower terminal on Sulphur Mountain to the summit, climbing more than 650 metres (2,100 feet) in elevation while offering continuously changing views of the surrounding landscape.

As the gondola ascends, visitors enjoy spectacular views over the Bow Valley, the town of Banff, and the surrounding mountain ranges. The higher the cabin climbs, the more expansive the scenery becomes, making the ride itself one of the highlights of the experience.

Although the ride lasts only about eight minutes, most visitors spend 2 to 4 hours at the summit. This allows plenty of time to explore the observation decks, walk the boardwalk to Sanson's Peak, visit the interpretive exhibits, enjoy a meal or coffee with mountain views, browse the gift shops, and take photographs from the various viewpoints.

Visitors are not limited in how long they stay at the top. After arriving, you can take your time exploring the summit before boarding a return gondola whenever you're ready, subject to the attraction's operating hours.

For those hiking Sulphur Mountain, the gondola can also be used as a one-way trip. Many hikers choose to hike up the mountain and ride the gondola back down, or ride to the summit first and hike down, allowing for a flexible and enjoyable mountain adventure. Book Banff Gondola Ride Admission
