How long is the Sulphur Mountain hike?

The Sulphur Mountain Trail is approximately 5.5 kilometres (3.4 miles) one way, making it an 11-kilometre (6.8-mile) round-trip hike if you walk both up and down.

Most hikers take 2 to 3 hours to reach the summit, depending on their fitness level, pace, and how often they stop to rest or enjoy the scenery. The descent usually takes 1.5 to 2.5 hours, so hiking both directions typically requires 3.5 to 5.5 hours in total.

The trail gains approximately 700 metres (2,300 feet) in elevation as it climbs from the Banff Gondola base to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. Although the distance is relatively short, the continuous uphill climb makes it a solid workout.

The trail follows a series of well-maintained switchbacks through a forest of lodgepole pine and spruce. Because the grade remains consistent throughout the hike, most visitors find it easier than many mountain trails with steeper, uneven sections. As you gain elevation, occasional openings in the trees reveal spectacular views of Banff, the Bow Valley, Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, and the surrounding peaks.

Many visitors choose to hike only one direction. Hiking up and riding the Banff Gondola down is the most popular option, allowing you to enjoy the challenge of reaching the summit while avoiding the long descent. Others prefer to ride up and hike down, enjoying the summit attractions before taking a leisurely walk back to the base.

Once you reach the summit, allow extra time to explore the boardwalk to Sanson's Peak, visit the interpretive exhibits, relax on the observation decks, enjoy a meal or coffee, and take in the panoramic mountain views. For many visitors, spending one to two additional hours at the summit makes the experience even more rewarding. Book Banff Gondola Ride Admission
