How high does the gondola go?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

How high does the gondola go?

The Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola climbs to the main village at an elevation of approximately 2,159 metres (7,083 feet) above sea level. Starting from the base area at about 1,659 metres (5,443 feet), the gondola gains roughly 500 metres (1,640 feet) in elevation during its scenic 20-minute journey.

As the gondola ascends, the scenery changes dramatically. The ride begins in a dense evergreen forest before emerging into the open alpine, where expansive views of mountain peaks, valleys, and meadows unfold. The higher elevation provides a noticeably cooler climate and a true alpine environment that feels far removed from the valley below.

Upon arriving at Sunshine Village, visitors are already above the tree line in one of the highest mountain villages in the Canadian Rockies. From here, they can explore Sunshine Meadows, enjoy mountain dining, or continue even higher by riding the Standish Sightseeing Chairlift, which reaches an elevation of approximately 2,385 metres (7,825 feet) and offers some of the finest panoramic views in Banff National Park.
