How fast does the gondola travel?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

How fast does the gondola travel?

The Banff Gondola travels at a speed of approximately 6 metres per second (about 22 km/h or 13.7 mph) under normal operating conditions. At this speed, the journey from the lower terminal to the summit of Sulphur Mountain takes about 8 minutes.

The gondola is designed to provide a smooth and comfortable ride rather than a fast one. The cabins slow down as they enter and leave the stations, allowing passengers to board and exit safely before accelerating for the climb up the mountain.

As the gondola ascends, the steady pace gives visitors plenty of time to enjoy the changing scenery. The ride passes over dense evergreen forests before opening to spectacular views of the Bow Valley, the town of Banff, Mount Rundle, Cascade Mountain, Tunnel Mountain, and many other surrounding peaks.

The gondola's speed may occasionally be adjusted depending on weather conditions, particularly during periods of strong winds or maintenance procedures. These adjustments help ensure a safe and comfortable journey while still providing visitors with an enjoyable sightseeing experience.

Although the ride itself lasts only about eight minutes, the gradual ascent allows visitors to fully appreciate the dramatic change in elevation as they climb more than 650 metres (2,100 feet) from the valley floor to the summit of Sulphur Mountain. Book Banff Gondola Ride Admission
