Does the chairlift close during storms?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Does the chairlift close during storms?

Yes. The Standish Chairlift may close temporarily during storms if weather conditions make it unsafe to operate. Safety is always the top priority, and mountain lifts are closely monitored throughout the day.

Thunderstorms, lightning, high winds, or other severe weather can result in the chairlift being paused or temporarily shut down. Because the Standish Chairlift is an open-air lift, it is more susceptible to weather-related closures than the enclosed sightseeing gondola.

Many mountain storms are brief, particularly during the summer. If conditions improve, the chairlift will typically reopen once it is safe to do so. During a temporary closure, visitors can remain at Sunshine Village, enjoy the restaurants, browse the gift shop, or explore areas that remain open while waiting for operations to resume.

If the weather is expected to be unsettled, it's a good idea to visit earlier in the day. Summer mornings often have calmer conditions, while thunderstorms are more likely to develop during the afternoon. Arriving early gives you the best chance to enjoy both the sightseeing gondola and the Standish Chairlift before any weather changes occur.
