Do I need winter boots?

It depends on the time of year and what you plan to do at the summit.

During summer (June through early September), winter boots are not necessary. Comfortable walking shoes, trail shoes, or light hiking shoes are more than adequate for exploring the summit complex and the Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk.

During spring and autumn, conditions can vary from dry pavement to snow and ice, especially in the mornings or after storms. Waterproof hiking boots with good traction are often a better choice than regular running shoes if snow is in the forecast.

During winter, insulated winter boots are highly recommended. Although the summit pathways and main boardwalk are maintained, snow, packed snow, and icy patches are common. Winter boots with good grip will keep your feet warmer and provide much better traction than running shoes.

If you plan to hike Sulphur Mountain in winter, winter boots become even more important. The hiking trail can be snow-covered or icy, and proper footwear greatly improves comfort and safety. Some hikers also choose to use traction devices, such as ice cleats, when trail conditions are slippery.

For visitors who are simply riding the gondola to the summit during winter, winter boots are not absolutely required, but they are strongly recommended if you intend to spend time outdoors on the observation decks or boardwalk. Warm, waterproof footwear will make your visit much more comfortable in cold and snowy conditions. Book Banff Gondola Ride Admission
