Can you watch wildlife from the top?

Yes. The summit of the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift is one of the best places in the Banff area to watch wildlife. Because you're already high in the alpine, you have an excellent vantage point to observe animals on nearby slopes, cliffs, and meadows without hiking deep into the backcountry.

The wildlife you're most likely to see is bighorn sheep. They are regular residents of the mountain and are often spotted grazing on grassy hillsides, resting on rocky ledges, or moving confidently across steep cliffs. It isn't unusual for visitors to see them relatively close to the summit, making Mt. Norquay one of the most reliable places in Banff National Park to observe these iconic animals.

Marmots are another common sight during the summer. They often sit on sun-warmed rocks near the viewpoints, and their loud whistling calls can usually be heard before you spot them. Pikas, small rabbit-like mammals, also live among the rocky slopes and may be seen gathering grasses and wildflowers for winter.

Bird enthusiasts will find plenty to watch as well. Golden eagles, hawks, ravens, Clark's nutcrackers, gray jays, and other alpine birds are frequently seen soaring above the cliffs or flying between the surrounding peaks.

Although less common, visitors occasionally spot mountain goats, mule deer, or even black bears and grizzly bears on distant mountainsides. These sightings are special and usually occur well away from the main visitor areas. Binoculars can greatly improve your chances of seeing wildlife that may be difficult to detect with the naked eye.

The best wildlife viewing usually takes place during the early morning and late afternoon, when animals are more active and temperatures are cooler. During these quieter times, the mountain often feels especially peaceful, and wildlife is more likely to venture into open areas.

For the best experience, bring a pair of binoculars or a camera with a telephoto lens. They allow you to observe wildlife from a safe distance while appreciating natural behaviours without disturbing the animals.

Remember that all wildlife in Banff National Park is wild and should be respected. Never approach or feed animals, no matter how calm they appear.
