Can you see mountain goats?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Mount Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift

Can you see mountain goats?

Yes, although mountain goats are seen less frequently than bighorn sheep at the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift.

The steep limestone cliffs and rugged alpine terrain around Mt. Norquay provide suitable habitat for mountain goats. If you do spot one, it will usually be on high cliff faces or rocky ledges that seem almost inaccessible. Their white coats stand out against the gray rock, making them easier to spot from a distance, especially with binoculars or a telephoto camera lens.

However, the animal visitors are most likely to see is the bighorn sheep. Mt. Norquay is well known for its resident bighorn sheep, which are often seen grazing near the summit, resting on rocky slopes, or moving across the mountainside. Because they are more accustomed to the area, they are encountered far more often than mountain goats.

If your goal is specifically to see mountain goats, your best chances are during the quieter hours of early morning or late afternoon, when wildlife is generally more active. Even then, sightings are never guaranteed, as mountain goats often spend much of their time on remote cliffs away from visitor areas.

Bring binoculars if wildlife viewing is one of your priorities. Many mountain goats are spotted high above or across distant ridges, where they can appear as small white dots to the naked eye. A pair of binoculars greatly improves your chances of enjoying a close look.

Whether you see mountain goats or not, the Mt. Norquay area offers excellent wildlife viewing opportunities. Along with bighorn sheep, you may also encounter marmots, pikas, mule deer, golden eagles, Clark's nutcrackers, and other alpine wildlife during your visit. Book the Mt. Norquay Sightseeing Chairlift
