Can you see bighorn sheep?

Yes. Bighorn sheep can occasionally be seen around the Banff Gondola, although they are not as commonly spotted as elk. Sulphur Mountain and the surrounding slopes are part of their natural habitat, and from time to time visitors are fortunate enough to see them grazing on grassy hillsides or navigating the rocky terrain.

The best chance of seeing bighorn sheep is during the gondola ride or while looking across the surrounding mountains from the summit observation decks. They often prefer steep, rocky slopes where they can quickly escape predators, so they are more likely to be seen at a distance than close to the boardwalk or summit buildings.

Bighorn sheep are well adapted to mountain life. Their specialized hooves provide exceptional grip on narrow ledges and steep cliffs, allowing them to move across terrain that appears almost impossible to climb. Rams are easily recognized by their large, curled horns, while females have shorter, more slender horns and are often seen with lambs during the warmer months.

The autumn rut, which typically occurs in late fall, is one of the most exciting times to observe bighorn sheep. During this period, rams compete for breeding rights by displaying their strength and occasionally engaging in dramatic head-butting contests. Outside the breeding season, they are usually seen quietly grazing or resting on open slopes.

Although sightings near the summit are possible, bighorn sheep generally avoid the busiest visitor areas. They are more likely to be found on quieter mountainsides surrounding Sulphur Mountain than near the gondola station or restaurants.

If you do spot bighorn sheep, observe them from a respectful distance and never attempt to approach or feed them. They are wild animals and should be allowed to behave naturally without disturbance. A pair of binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens can make it much easier to appreciate their impressive climbing ability and watch their natural behavior from afar.
