Can you ride in the rain?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola & Standish Chairlift

Can you ride in the rain?

Yes. You can usually ride both the Sunshine Village Sightseeing Gondola and the Standish Chairlift in light rain, provided weather conditions remain safe. Mountain weather is unpredictable, and brief showers are common during the summer, so the lifts are designed to continue operating in normal rainy conditions.

The Sightseeing Gondola is enclosed, so passengers stay dry and comfortable during the ride. Large windows still provide excellent views, although visibility may be reduced if low clouds or rain move into the area.

The Standish Chairlift is an open-air lift, so you will be exposed to the weather. If it's raining, you'll likely get wet unless you have waterproof clothing. A rain jacket with a hood is recommended, even on days that begin with sunshine, as mountain showers can develop quickly.

Light rain often adds a different atmosphere to the alpine landscape. Clouds drifting through the mountains, mist rising from the meadows, and rain-enhanced colours can create beautiful scenery and unique photographic opportunities.

However, if rain is accompanied by lightning, strong winds, or severe storms, lift operations may be temporarily suspended for safety. Once the weather improves and it is safe to operate, the lifts typically reopen. If the forecast calls for unsettled weather, visiting earlier in the day often provides the best chance of enjoying both lifts before afternoon storms develop.
