Are there elk nearby?

Yes. Elk are commonly found in the Mt. Norquay area, particularly around the lower elevations near the base of the mountain and along the access road. While they are seen less often at the summit, they are one of the most frequently observed large mammals in the surrounding forests and meadows.

The best times to see elk are early in the morning and late in the evening, when they are most active. They often graze in open grassy areas, forest clearings, and roadside meadows before retreating into the trees during the warmer, busier parts of the day.

Autumn is an especially exciting time to visit if you're hoping to see elk. From September through early October, the annual rut, or mating season, takes place. During this period, large bull elk gather harems of females and fill the valleys with their distinctive bugling calls. Visitors may also witness displays of dominance between bulls, although these animals should always be observed from a safe distance.

During spring and early summer, female elk often have young calves. At this time of year, cows can be highly protective and may become aggressive if people or pets get too close. Giving elk plenty of space is essential throughout the year.

Although elk occasionally wander higher up the mountain, they are much more likely to be encountered near the base area, access road, or in the surrounding valleys than around the summit itself. Many visitors spot elk while driving to or from Mt. Norquay rather than during the chairlift ride.

If you see elk, enjoy them from a distance using binoculars or a camera with a zoom lens. Never approach them for photographs or attempt to feed them. Despite their calm appearance, elk are large, powerful wild animals capable of running quickly and defending themselves if they feel threatened.
