Are the cabins heated?

Banff National Park offers four major Gondola sightseeing lift experiences, each providing a unique way to experience the Canadian Rockies.

Are the cabins heated?

The Banff Gondola cabins are not individually heated, but they are fully enclosed to provide protection from the wind, rain, snow, and cold mountain air. The enclosed design helps keep the ride much more comfortable than being exposed to the elements, even during winter.

Because the journey to the summit takes only about eight minutes, most visitors remain comfortable throughout the ride. Body heat from passengers and protection from the wind also help make the cabins feel warmer than the outside air, especially on cold days.

During the warmer months, the cabins are not air-conditioned. Instead, the short ride and enclosed design provide a comfortable sightseeing experience while allowing passengers to enjoy panoramic views through the large windows.

Once you arrive at the summit, you can warm up inside the upper terminal, which features heated indoor spaces, restaurants, cafés, gift shops, and viewing areas. In winter, many visitors alternate between exploring the outdoor boardwalk and relaxing inside before continuing their visit.

Although the cabins themselves are not heated, visitors should dress for mountain conditions. The summit is often several degrees cooler than the town of Banff, and temperatures can change quickly throughout the day, so wearing layers is recommended in every season.
