Are dogs allowed?
Yes. Dogs are allowed at the Banff Gondola, making it one of the more pet-friendly attractions in Banff National Park. Visitors are welcome to bring their dogs on the gondola and to most outdoor public areas at the summit, provided they follow the park's pet regulations.
All dogs must remain on a leash at all times. This helps protect wildlife, ensures the safety of other visitors, and prevents pets from wandering into sensitive alpine habitats. Banff National Park has strict leash requirements, and they are enforced throughout the gondola property and surrounding trails.
Dogs are welcome inside the gondola cabins, allowing them to ride comfortably with their owners to the summit. Many visitors also hike up Sulphur Mountain with their dogs and either hike back down or purchase a one-way gondola ticket for the descent.
Once at the summit, leashed dogs are welcome on the observation decks and along the Sulphur Mountain Boardwalk, including most of the route toward Sanson's Peak. The boardwalk provides an enjoyable walk with outstanding mountain views, making it a popular outing for visitors and their four-legged companions.
While dogs are permitted in outdoor areas, they are not allowed inside food service areas, including restaurants and cafes, except for trained service animals. If you're planning to dine, one member of your group will need to remain with your dog outside, or you can take turns visiting the restaurants.
Owners are expected to clean up after their pets and dispose of waste properly. Carrying waste bags and fresh water is recommended, especially during warm summer days. Although temperatures are cooler at the summit than in Banff, sunny days and the higher elevation can still make dogs thirsty.
Because Sulphur Mountain is home to wildlife such as elk, deer, bighorn sheep, bears, and smaller alpine animals, keeping dogs under control is especially important. A leashed dog is less likely to disturb wildlife or create dangerous encounters for either the animal or other visitors.
Overall, the Banff Gondola is an excellent attraction for visitors traveling with dogs. The combination of a pet-friendly gondola ride, accessible outdoor viewing areas, and the scenic boardwalk allows both you and your dog to enjoy one of the most spectacular mountaintop experiences in the Canadian Rockies.
